My Approach

Who I help

I provide individual therapy to adults, either face-to-face or online. I do not work with children, couples, or groups.

Types of problems I help with

I have over 10 years of experience helping clients with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Addiction
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Borderline personality disorder

How I work

This is the process I use with my clients:

  1. Clarify the issues Figuring out exactly what's going on can be confusing, especially at the start, when several things are often happening at once.
  2. Select the most important problems to target We create a hierarchy of targets based on what matters most to you, so therapy stays focused.
  3. Create a treatment plan Once we have a clear target, we start building a plan, identifying and organising the components involved.
  4. Work through the case formulation This is the main work of therapy: exploring each component, getting clear on your unique presentation, and addressing it with the right tool.
  5. Track target behaviours Therapy aims to build new, more effective behaviours. We set clear goals and track progress throughout.
  6. Review and calibrate Therapy is a living process. We regularly review and refine the plan as things develop.

Modalities I use

My goal is to get results as safely and efficiently as possible. Based on the research, I consider the following modalities to be the safest and most effective:

  1. Behavioural therapy (BT) The gold standard for many anxiety disorders, and considered the first wave of behaviour therapy. BT forms the foundation for the other behavioural therapies below.
  2. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) The gold standard for a wide range of difficulties, especially depression and addiction. Known as the second wave of behaviour therapy, and the foundation of most modern behavioural approaches.
  3. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) A third-wave behavioural therapy, and the gold standard for serious emotional dysregulation, especially borderline personality disorder. It's a highly practical modality with extensive skills training.
  4. Transactional analysis (TA) Excellent for interpersonal issues and relationships, and a genuinely popular modality with clients.
  5. Schema therapy Another third-wave behavioural therapy, well suited to a deeper exploration within a cognitive therapy framework, and well established in the research.
  6. Motivational interviewing (MI) Another gold-standard treatment for addiction, strongly supported by empirical research.
